Isolde – The Sheldonian Theatre, Oxford

Associate Designer

A bold re-imagining of Wagner’s opera Tristan und Isolde, this new production was based on composer Gustav Mahler and designer Alfred Roller’s visionary staging of the classic at the Vienna Court Opera in 1903.

The inner emotional landscape of Irish princess Isolde is conveyed through a dramatic site-specific staging that incorporates the architecture of the Grade I listed theatre. Sculptural set pieces, such as the Wagnerian tree, allude to the tensions presented as Isolde and her confidante Brangäne lead us on a journey, in the absence of Tristan.
