MIRROR HOUR: TIMES OF REFLECTION

A Christmas Concept

We have 24 hours in our day, where there are also 24 moments where we have repeated time, such as 11:11 or 12:12. These are known as mirror hours, and to many they evoke a sense of reflection, mystery and connection. Similar to the connotations of mirror hour 16:16, the month of December for all of us is a time of reflection, looking back on ourselves throughout the year, expressing gratitude, encouraging positivity, and anticipating the new year ahead. MIRROR HOUR is a new artistic concept of 16 timepieces stacked back-to-back presenting a mirror effect.

Quotes for reflection:

The quotes below offer a thought-provoking exploration of reflection at the year’s end, and combined with the mirror hour symbolism they challenge readers to consider not only what they’ve done but how they’ve grown and what they’ll carry forward into the new year.

  • We do not learn from experience. We learn from reflecting on experience – John Dewey. This quote highlights the importance of actively processing and interpreting the events of the past year, rather than letting them slip by unexamined.

  • Time is a created thing. To say ‘I don’t have time’ is like saying, ‘I don’t want to’ – Lao Tzu. A reminder that reflection is an intentional act—one we must choose to make time for, particularly at the close of the year.

  • The only journey is the one within – Rainer Maria Rilke. End-of-year reflection serves as a moment to journey inward, cultivating self-awareness and growth.

  • You do not see the world as it is. You see it as you are – Anaïs Nin. Reflection becomes a mirror not only of external events but of our internal state, pushing us to examine how our mindset colours our experiences.

  • Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate – Carl Jung. A profound challenge to uncover hidden patterns in your thoughts and behaviours over the year.

The prompting questions below offer the chance to reflect on your thinking and perspective:

  • What did you hold onto this year that you now realise you could let go of? What has holding on taught you?

  • What’s one thing you thought would never change, but did—and how do you feel about it now?

  • If you could distill the year into one hour, which moments would you hold in your hands?

  • What unconscious habits or patterns defined your actions this year? How might you consciously reshape them next year?

  • In moments of loneliness this year, what did you discover about yourself?

  • Looking backward, what surprises you most about where you started this year compared to where you are now?
